What is this operation?
Adenotonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils and adenoids. It is commonly performed for recurrent throat infections, snoring, or breathing difficulties.
What to Expect After Surgery
- Throat pain for 7–14 days
- Ear pain is common
- Difficulty swallowing for up to 14 days
- Low-grade fever for 1–2 days
- White coating in the throat is normal healing
Recovery Time
- Recovery period: 10–14 days
- Return to school/work: 10–14 days
- Full healing: 2–3 weeks
Post-operative Care (DOs)
- Give prescribed medications regularly
- Encourage fluids (water, ORS, juice)
- Provide a soft and cool diet
- Maintain good oral hygiene
- Ensure adequate rest
What to Avoid (DON’Ts)
- Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods
- Avoid excessive talking or coughing
- Avoid strenuous activity for 2 weeks
- Do not give aspirin
- Avoid distant travel
Possible Complications
- Pain, dehydration, nausea, or vomiting
- Bleeding (serious complication)
- High fever
- Breathing difficulty
Follow-up & Key Advice
- Visit your doctor in 1–2 weeks
- Hydration is most important
- Bad breath is normal during healing
- Watch for late bleeding

Bleeding from the mouth or nose, vomiting blood, extreme weakness, or inability to drink fluids requires urgent medical attention.
